Fire Cider is new to me, but has been around for hundreds of years. Traditionally, it has been used to boost the immune system and fight off common illnesses.

These past few months, our family has struggled to stay healthy. We’ve been battling colds and viruses since late July. With someone being sick every other week, we are kind of desperate to find something that works.

Taking Fire Cider can help clear your sinuses, give you energy, and, if raw honey is included, can help soothe a sore throat.

There are several different versions such as the famous Rosemary Gladstar’s Original Recipe but I have modified different ones that I have found to make a version that I think would best fit our needs.

Ingredients

apple cider vinegar, rosemary, onion, horseradish root, ginger root, garlic, lemon, raw honey, turmeric
  • ½ cup of chopped onions
  • ¼ cup of garlic
  • ½ cup of raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon of ground turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon of rosemary
  • ½ cup of grated ginger
  • ½ jalapeno
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of grated horseradish root
  • 2 lemons

Directions

  1. Chop onions and grate horseradish and ginger. Add to a jar.
  2. Peel garlic (approximately 1/4 of a cup) and add.
  3. Measure out all dry ingredients and combine.
  4. Because they are the messiest, I saved the jalapeno and lemon for last. Remember to wear gloves when dealing with peppers!
  5. Pour apple cider vinegar over the top to cover all ingredients by 3-4 inches.
  6. Place a square of wax paper between the lid and the jar if you are using a metal lid. A plastic lid is preferable.
  7. Shake and leave it in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks.
  8. Remember to shake it every day. This helps infuse all the ingredients.
  9. After four weeks, strain the fire cider into mason jars. Add raw honey to help improve the taste.
  10. You can store in the fridge for months.

Note: Looking back, I should have used a jar with a wider neck as getting all of the lemons and jalapenos out is going to be a pain. However, I was looking for an amber jar to use as it will filter out light. I also wanted to make a fairly big batch and that was the biggest receptacle I had.
